Wingarra® Lomandra is a strappy leaf plant with large Deep Rhizomes

Wingarra® Lomandra is a strappy leaf plant with large Deep Rhizomes

Wingarra® Lomandra contertifolia

This tough little Lomandra has a very fine texture which from a distance gives it the appearance of a native tussock grass. Better still this Wingarra® Lomandra has been here for 12 years and has never been pruned. Look how evergreen it is.

Unlike Tussock grass or Poa, Wingarra® Lomandra will generally not need trimming. Its blue appearance provides a nice contrast to other plants. Being a Lomandra contertifolia, Wingarra® Lomandra is slower than Lomandra longifolia types so larger pot sizes are recommended. Wingarra® Lomandra is particularly good for areas that get part shade.

Unlike all other contertifolia types in the market place Wingarra® Lomandra has deep rhizomes which make it tougher and more able to cope with difficult;t situations. Wingarra® Lomandra reaches a height of 30cm to 40cm with a spread of 50cm to 60cm after a few years.

The Kidsafe Playground Renovation Completed

The Kidsafe Playground Renovation Completed

Shara™ Lomandra

Ozbreed donated plants to the Kidsafe Playground in Westmead Sydney to use throughout their playground. Katrina Layt from the Ozbreed office had also put in her time to help out at their working bee.

The plant varieties donated to the Kidsafe Playground by Ozbreed are great plants that are naturally safe for children, soft to touch, and can handle rough kids! Here’s a list of the varieties that were used in this playspace.

Grey Box™ Westringia fruticosa ‘WES04’ PBR
Shara™ Lomandra fluviatilis ‘ABU7’ PBR
Tanika® Lomandra longifolia ‘LM300’ PBR.

Out of these plants, a few Shara were planted next to a balance beam in playground mulch to demonstrate the success of the Playground Mulch Trial. Over the last 3 years Ozbreed has been taking part along with Fiona Robbe’ Landscape Architects, The Bark Blower and Acoustoscan in the Playground Mulch Trial. Results have shown that strappy plants can be used in playground mulch with good plant health, as well as safety.

Tanika® Lomandra is a drought tolerant landscape plant

Tanika® Lomandra is a drought tolerant landscape plant

Tanika® Lomandra longfolia 'LM300' PBR

In Spring 2012 Tanika® Lomandra had its 10th birthday as the best landscape plant in Australia. Its popularity keeps rising whether it’s for a home garden or a large commercial development. So why is it so popular?

Is it its clean fine dark green foliage and its bright golden flowers that make it a vast improvement over the common Lomandra?

Is it its evergreen foliage in cold frost and its legendary drought tolerance. No other Lomandra has ever come close and the ones that also have fine foliage simply never stay as clean.

If you want green and not straw brown in cold heat and drought then Tanika® Lomandra is the best and most reliable choice. Tanika® Lomandra has an average size of 60cm wide and high and if it gets taller than this, a trim every 4 to 5 years keeps it really tidy.

In Spring or Autumn either prune it into a ball shape or prune it hard back to a to about 15cm.

With its reliability and low maintenance Tanika® Lomandra has become Australia’s favourite evergreen plant.
